P.O. Box 10 - 333 G Street North Powder, OR 97867 Phone 541-898-2244 FAX 541-898-2046 March 8, 2021 Dear North Powder School District Parents, Students and Caregivers, We hope you are all doing well and getting ready for spring. As we look back over our year, a lot has changed. We are thankful for the opportunity to teach your child, as we believe the education they are receiving is top notch. We wanted to remind people about a few things when dropping off your child or picking them up. As the weather gets nicer, we understand the want of being out of your vehicle when either dropping your child off or picking them up. If you choose to be outside, please make sure you have a mask on that covers your nose and mouth. Also, if you are walking across the street to pick up your child, please use the crosswalks, as we will remind your children to use the crosswalks as well. We are continually trying to keep our students safe, and need your assistance with this as well. Respectfully, Lance L Dixon Superintendent Molly Smith Principal

The Baker County Sheriff's office is looking for responsible 18 year olds (or soon to be 18) individuals that may not have set career plans. This person(s) could be interested in being a reserve dispatcher where they learn to answer 911 calls, give directions for rescue techniques such as CPR, send medics, fire or law enforcement to emergencies etc. We are looking for people that are motivated, mature and can understand the importance of the job but also respect confidentiality of others while working at the Sheriff's Office. The reserve positions require volunteer time until the person is able to answer the phone and enter a call into the computer. Once that is complete they may be summoned to work a shift or partial shift with a full time dispatcher which would be paid. (A high school student was hired 3 weeks ago and is covering shifts now). Sheriff Ash has personally learned to work in the dispatcher center and it requires a lot of multi-tasking, being able to think fast and talk with people while typing what is being said into a "call" screen. It can be intense at times but also very rewarding. The department teaches the skills that are needed and reserves are paid at the same rate as a step 1 dispatcher. The reserve dispatcher always works with a partner. If any students or former students are interested, please have them reach out to Travis Ash and you all can get a "sit" in set up where the can come in and observe the dispatch center, watch experienced dispatchers work and see if they would enjoy this type of job. The department will do a complete background checks/drug screening etc before hiring a reserve. November 13, 2020 Dear North Powder School District Parents, Students and Caregivers, I hope everyone is doing well. I know these are trying times for all of us. I know the governor’s announcement today probably has many of you concerned. However, today I am bringing good news your way. This has no impact on schools at this time and on-site instruction will continue. There are two exceptions: Indoor sports are on hold at this time. This means no after school sports or private sports in indoor facilities. If you travel out of state for the holiday, you should self quarantine for 14 days and participate in CDL. Please, please help us stay open with students. Regardless of personal preference, we have demonstrated the ability to limit cases at school. Therefore, please follow travel restrictions, quarantine if you travel out of state to see families over the holidays and practice using personal protective equipment and social distancing. The district is required to add a travel question to screening and enforce students quarantining out of school if they travel out of state. As I see schools around us in CDL struggling dramatically with grades and other issues tied to CDL, I am ever so thankful we are in school!! Our students did exceptionally well overall academically the first 9 weeks. To lose what we have worked so hard to provide for children would be tragic. I know it is not easy, but it is up to each of us to do our part for our kids! Thanks for your patience, support and commitment to your children, this community and this school. This community has always been resilient, supportive and a great place to live. I feel fortunate to have raised my children here and hope we will continue to do our part to help all kids succeed. This includes keeping school open. Respectfully, Lance L Dixon Superintendent Molly Smith Principal

November 11, 2020 Dear Families, We are hosting “Badger Day” on Monday, November 16th. Badger Day is going to be a two hour session for our middle school students and high school students working on building empathy and compassion within our school. New Directions Northwest will be leading our two hour separate sessions. Our goal of this is to build our school community to help create a space where everyone feels safe. We realize that we have had an issue with bullying, and instead of tearing each other apart, we want to build each other up in order to become our best selves and best school environment. The two hour session will consist of interactive learning exercises, followed by small group interactions with a counselor from New Directions. Our middle school students will attend Badger Day from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., followed by our high school student body from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Staff will be in on all sessions with our students as well. We look forward to the day and bringing our student body together to be the best community we can be. Sincerely, Lance Dixon, Superintendent Molly Smith, Principal

The North Powder School District has moved the start date with students to September 8, 2020. This change was made due to a district determination that it would be in the best interest of families, students, and staff to delay the first day of school with students. In order to prepare for Comprehensive Distance Education per current ODE guidelines, there is additional professional development and planning that will need to occur for staff, students and families. This professional development will include online curriculum training, implementation of the district's operational blueprint for onsite education, and opportunities to meet with students and parents to update them on the online process and answer questions. This change in the starting date will not change any other dates on the calendar at the current time due to ODE guidelines allowing additional hours for professional development to count towards instructional time.
